about to do a format of main pc (in sig) will stick a load of files on my 250GB 2nd HD then unplug and do a format. WD 74GB Raptor as main HD

I have my XP Pro OS disk ready
then I have Sp2 on disk ready to install.

Now all these windows updates / security updates etc that Windows Update puts on my computer, is there a way to find them on my PC or am i best of installing my OS, then SP2 then do a windows update ?

Thank you

I think Windows does save the updates it downloads to a temp folder but I don't know where that is or even if it keeps them there afterwards.

You could if you like tryout nLite if you haven't already. Integrate your drivers then download RyamVM's update pack and integrate that into nLite as well. This installs all the updates for Windows XP since SP2 was released. You then make an ISO file to burn to CD and voila you have a legal disc with Windows XP + SP2 + all the post-SP2 updates installed. You are then as secure as you can be from the word go.

If you don't fancy doing this or need to get going quickly, I'd just re-install Windows, then SP2 then do a Windows Updates. If you have broadband it shouldn't really take that long.

yes i thought about Nlite, but had a go and looks very complicated to me, just worried if i dont put all the drivers in will it cause a problem or can i simply install them afterwards If i have missed any ?

thanks for the advice guys, I shall have another look at Nlite.

If you don't put a driver in then Windows won't install one and you will have to install it yourself when Windows is up and running. Nothing too serious.

Cheers,

one other thing.

Like i said i have a 2nd HD (samsung Spinpoint 250GB)

Main HD is a W/D Raptor 74GB.

I have not done anything with partitions before, nor do i have any knowledge of IF and SHOULD I do one on my C: Drive when doing this new format.

Should I ? Or should I not bother. Any advantage, I use only XP pro as my OS,

No point bothering with a partition on your Raptor. I don't have one on my Raptor nor even on my 250Gb 2nd HD. The only thing you might want to try out is moving the page file off the Raptor and on to the 2nd HD. This is meant to improve the speed of Windows but moving the pagefile off the Raptor might actually slow Windows down.
