windows update loop.

I'm having this problem now too. Windows "checking for updates . . ." loops endlessly with svchost.exe using about 25% cpu the whole time.

I tried installing the KB3102810 update manually but its had no effect

Someone posted this on another forum as someone was having similar issues updating windows.

Open Command Prompt by Start -> Run and type “cmd“
On the Command Prompt, type “net stop wuauserv“. This is done so that you will terminate the windows automatic update service to allow us to delete the cache files
Still on the Command Prompt, type “cd /d %windir%” or “cd\windows“
Type “rd /s SoftwareDistribution“
Thats it, the cache has been purged. Now we need to restart the windows automatic update service again. To do that, type “net start wuauserv“

or go here https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/971058 there are tools to do it i prefer manual typing hate those fix it tools

hmm tried that method you have shown, memory use went up to around 867,899K after around 5 min, but cpu still sits and occasionally jump up to and under 25% been looking for updates for 30 min

ON Win7 x64 here, I installed the KB3102810, tried to update and it was till the same.

Then, similar to what scrivz69 posted; I stopped windows update service and set it to manual using services.msc and I then deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder in C:\windows

Restarted and tried to update again, it spent about 90 minutes searching for updates but it did finally work. Downloading selected updates took longer than usual too, probably 30-45 mins for just 120mb but they did install fine . . .eventually.

nightmare99 To get the free windows 10 license do you not have to get to windows 7 sp1 first ?

Ideally I would like to get the free win 10 license (currently I am at win7 pro) and install this on a USB stick and then make sure I can stabilize the nvidia drivers and other more esoteric drivers I use (expresscard interfaced sound card).

Once usb is working upgrade principal win7 boot disc to win 10 with a fresh install (after having gone through pain of backing up data with special
attention to browser profiles/histories, microsoft office keys
... upgrading OS has got to be the third stress after moving house and divorce ?)
