I have this problem for some while and tried all of the Microsoft suggestions. I have set it to "automatic updates" but it still won't update.

I get this if I try a manual update:

But the get help code (a hotfix) doesn't work either! I don't really want to reinstall ALL my software and a "repair" does nothing.

Thanks, Mel

Blocked by software/hardware firewall? Tried a SFC /scannow to fix any corruption?

No - tried switching off AVG, Zone Alarm etc - I think somehow Windoze has got its "knickers in a twist". Also Windows MSE won't install either. Have virus checked etc with all known (to me) checkers (on-line and off line) and no apparrent malware or viruses present. Stumped!

I'm not sure MSE will install with other things like AVG and Zone Alarm.

I assume when you said you've tried all the Microsoft you have done these -

Method 1:Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Method 2: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe)
Method 3: Install the latest service pack for your version of Windows.
Method 4: Run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool with the sfc /scannow command
Method 5: Perform an in-place upgrade

Are you runninng Windows update from the start menu? Or is your problem just from the auto update?

Andi.

Methods 1 - 4 yes

Method 5 ??

I have tried a repair installation from the Win 7 installation disc but that says nothing is wrong !

???????

Tried that and get the error I posted - have been waiting several days for the Dec auto update - including leaving PC on 24hrs but no joy yet!

Rats!

Look to see what the last successful updates were, especially any kb updates, and try uninstalling them.

Can't do that - tweaking.com exe file execution (like MS reset procedure) has wiped out my update history - to no avial for future updates - still will not work.

Try uninstalling anything .NET related.

Also, you could try creating a new user account, see if that makes any difference.

Edit: I've had this problem on a few PCs and it was either a dodgy KB update or a .NET update/install that caused it.

Remove zone alarm. It's worse than a virus.

Take off avg too then reboot. If it's still not working, your time and date are correct, then get this tool if sfc didn't fix it.

I've had this problem (with same error in the screenshot)on my brother's PC on 7 ,I even tried this fixit from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/en-us ,in the end nothing worked ,however it started to work fine after a few months on its own so I never did find the cause.

I will say he was using MSE so doubt its AVG or AV in general.

Removed Net framework 4 which was the only net application installed this year. Restarted. Tried WU reset again from tweaking - no effect! Still no widoze updates- same error as above etc.

I'm at a loss as to what that could be then, tbh. Everything that I would do that has worked for me in the past has been done.

At this point I'd probably reinstall. The update history not being there makes it difficult. What about trying to actually install a couple of the updates manually?

I have microsoft baseline security analyzer installed and that tells me what I am missing. I have manually downloaded updates before and this has set the ball rolling. This time 17 updates rolled in!

But 2 keep re-appearing

KB2676562
KB2872339

These seem to be in a loop - they install but do not complete installation - this started in September (for not just me from web searches)

Why can't it just work!!

Mel

But - SP1, millions of updates, PS, LR, MS Office, DVD software, etc etc - life is too short for that . . . . I have backups on Win Home Server - but I am not sure if they contain the same Win 7 update "defect"
