I don't want to update to Win 10 yet and I haven't asked it to update yet but on my 3 PCs (2 win 7, 1 win 8) both show "Windows 10 installation failed" for each batch of recent Win 7 or Win 8 updates.

Is this an "artefact"?

Windows 10 is an ongoing battle. Once you get it installed then there's still bound to be more problems as there's lack of drivers and things that don't work like hardware devices. Maybe if you can't get to Win10 yet then maybe it's not such a bad thing at this stage until they produce more drivers then it's not good :(

you can force the update if you want, inside the hidden folder on C: there is an ESD file which can be converted to an iso, burn it to a disk then just do an upgrade from within windows (i did this with my win 8.1 install and another win 7 install)

might be best to do a backup first though, i used acronis.

what i did with mine was to download the ISO file, extract the iso file to a folder and run setup.exe, this worked for me and i did the same on a netbook, another PC and a laptop with no issues.

use their download tool to get the ISO and it will even give you the option to create a bootable USB stick

Yes, the failed updates are a side effect of the Windows 10 pending update. Your machine isn't going to explode, it's fine.
