I've got some weird problem at the moment where Windows Update in vista 64 has stopped working all together since the weekend, saying it can't search for Updates and throwing up Error: 80070424.

I've been through various solutions online involving BITS service restart, changing settings and even got a call logged with MS for support. They have sent several suggestions so far like deactivating AV, renaming software distribution folders, re-registering Windows Update DLL files and internet explorer files but all just remain the same with that error message.

It's weird as only thing that has gone on my pc in the last week that could have caused it is Spore (game) and some updates, which I cant see as one step has wiped my update history now! I even restored to over a week ago before the problem staretd and still not working. Hmph :(

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if I've got exactly the same error, but I do have a similar issue. I've not had a chance to sort it out yet, but I'll post anything that I do here :)

try..

REGSVR32.EXE WUAUENG.DLL

or....

-------------------

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

run..
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try again.

--------------
if that fails.

Have you seen this page...?

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/windows_update_codes.htm

It shows that 0x80070424 means:

ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST

Due to a bug in BITS 1.5 OOB setup, after BITS 1.5 install, the BITS service is deleted, but the 1.5 install returns success code. BITS 1.5 binaries are copied to the machine, but the service doesn’t exist. This can also happen if the BITS service is explicitly deleted by running the command sc delete bits

edit: oops, the page I originally linked to wasn't the one I meant to.... will try and find the one I meant to link to.

Yep, I do have exactly the same error. Tried the above to no avail :(

Those wouldn't register though.

For me this one wouldn't register: regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll

Weird...

MS support latest suggestion was to send wuauserv.reg attachment and to merge with mine, but didn't work either ><

Thanks for the suggestions though!

Burnsy, are you on Vista 64 also with this problem?

Having no such problem with my XPS M1530 on Vista 64 on Home rather than Ultimate, fully updated.

The only time I ever had problem with getting Windows updates is when the clock was way out of date (like by 2 years). Probably not the issue here (the code was quite specific) but worth a try if you haven't checked it ;)

I can't get to Updates on Vista or XP, on any of five machines. I also can't get to support.microsoft.com - all are doing a bit of re-directing, then stalling. I'd say a part of the M$ empire is either under attack, or has fallen over.

After a ten minute wait, M$ Update on XP pro just gave me this:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To turn on Automatic Updates:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
* Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
* Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.

I'm using IE7...

Hmm, today I though it had all sorted itself out when I turned my PC on and Windows Update announced it was downloading something, and promptly installed Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 Sept 08. Then it went back to Error 80070424 again.

MS Support are going to give me a call this week so will update if that gets anywhere...

Not sure if it's the same error, but mine wouldn't update nor the Defender data base.
I turned off the ActiveX filtering in my router, now it works fine.
