Windows update stuck at 15%.... :(

Well, had this about 2 weeks now.

Windows boots, starts installing updates, gets to 15%, fails, reverts changes, reboots and enters windows fine. The windows update box pops up a few minutes after boot wanting a reboot. I can either ignore it (postpone for 4 hours) or let it reboot with the exact same effect (15% pre login screen, fail, reboot, loads fine to login screen).

I've tried using the fixit application thing and that claims it's done it's work but still nothing. Checking my update history it's a series of recent security updates that are failing.

Anyone got any ideas? Seems none of the updates have a knowledge base installer program so I'm screwed for that angle. I've had something like it once before but I forget how I fixed it :(

does exactly the same on mine. Hissed off with it now. I press ctl-alt-del to shut down so it doesn't try to instal the 15% then revert.
Could try putting win disk in and select repair windows. See if that works

Other suggestions would be good but yeah, I'll give the windows disk a whirl maybe. I'd think it unlikely to help tho as we've had a lot of patches since release so most stuff will be updated... dunno, worth a go I guess :)

As an extra question:
I had a MSDN version of windows from a friend (yeah, mildly dodgy license wise) that had to be removed during the whole crack down after folks were selling win 7 keys on ebay.
I got hold of a (completely legal) copy of windows 7 ultimate upgrade intending to use an old XP key. Tried a "change product key" from system properties and that worked fine though without a re-install needed. How does a fresh install work when using one of the upgrade keys? It asks for an old key or just assumes you have one?

I had this last week. Try installing one at a time. I installed all the security updates together and all the other updates together, and it worked, so perhaps give that a go first.

I had this too, tried one at a time without any luck and eventually got so bored of trying to fix it that I just formatted and reinstalled everything. I figure that when Windows Update can't run properly then it's probably a good time to give everything a spring clean.

Try
Stop the service "Windows Update"
Delete/rename C:\windows\softaredistrobution
start windows update service
check for updates and install.
