Windows Update Troubles

Hey,

Recently repaired the Windows XP Home (SP2) install on my gaming computer.

Now i keep getting the 'download updates' icon in system tray, which is fine. Said update consists of roughly 200 tiny updates, most of which are named 'Update for Windows XP' or 'Security update for windows XP'.

The trouble is, i click download and it goes away, then 10 - 15 minutes later when i get the popup to install downloaded updates, it puts some on then says some couldn't be installed.

Also, EVERY time i click shutdown, i get prompted to 'Install Updates then Shut Down', yet i'm faced with the same set of files to download/install upon entering windows after every boot.

How can i get these buggers installed and out of my face?

Any help much appreciated.

Method 2.
Had exactly the same yesterday with a repair install of XP. Registering the files cured it for me.

Just registered the .dll's here and after a restart updates worked fine.

*edit*

Actually I registered 4 files in total.

REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
