Windows Update woes - Win 8

Hey chaps, have an annoying problem here. For some reason my Windows Update tool has stopped working. It comes up with various errors after I attempt to search for updates. So I did some research and came up with some help. The help advised I run the windows update troubleshooter which I did - and it found and resolved a problem. But still no joy. This has only recently stopped working so I'm not sure what is going on.

I get seemingly random error codes when running the update tool. The latest is 8024A000

Any ideas?

Total reinstall of windows the big one but always gets my problems sorted.

hehe yeah the total belt and braces of fixes. But I'd rather not go down that route if I can help it - I do have a recent image I could reinstall I suppose, if it came to it. But I'm intrigued to know why this has stopped working.
