I have a client with an issue on his home PC, basically it used to be joined to our domain but hasnt been for months and since it was removed he has installed various software applications and also windows updates.

But... now when he tries to do windows updates, he gets a persmissions error even though he is logged on as a Local admin!

I cant for the life of me think whats going on, does anyone have any suggestions?

may domain admin login?
Check Group policyes (i presume your using WUS o the local network). Bear in mind i not that familior with WUS i wonder if its failing because its done windows update. WuS will have a recorde of what the PC has had in past and what it should be missing.

Same as always not much help.

Its not joined to the domain, the updates are trying to install from the windows update website and i've also downloaded the individual KB to no avail.

are you logged into the administrator account or logged into a normal account with admin privs?

Both, it doesnt make any difference which account the client is logged on as.

I've asked him to bring the box in to the office tomorrow so i can take a closer look but i am bemused as to why it would say he doesnt have permissions.

I'm going to try secpol.msc to see if that shows anything.

it is possible to disable windows update in gpedit. I think it then gives this error (I accidentally did it once when I didn't want it auto updating)

this is of no relevance but imo windows updates causes more problems then it fixes anyway :p
