Windows users will be allowed to downgrade to XP from Win7, skip Vista

Windows XP is a solid operating system, if a bit outdated. The Windows 7 Beta has been promising, and is a definite improvement in both speed and stability over Windows Vista. However, some people might not share my warm feelings towards Microsoft’s latest OS, and would prefer that their new computers have XP preinstalled, or have the capability to install XP over Windows 7. It has been confirmed that users can do this without having to deal with Vista at all.

According to BetaNews, a Microsoft spokesperson came out and stated that users will be able to downgrade from Windows 7 to XP without a problem. This comes after the news that Microsoft would continue to support XP through at least June 2010. Users of Windows 7 may skip Vista entirely when downgrading.

XP is being kept on by Microsoft as the OS of choice for Ultra-Low-Cost-Portables (netbooks), though Windows 7 is fully capable of running on these sometimes underpowered machines. It is unclear if users who purchase netbooks with XP will be offered incentives to upgrade to Windows 7.

Wrong.

Users will not have the option to 'Downgrade'

OEM sellers will be able to sell PCs with XP installed even following the launch of 7. You will not be able to buy a Windows 7 PC and downgrade to a legal version of XP yourself, you will just be able to buy one with XP on it.

I think people who are clinging onto XP are mad! Why someone would want to shove an 8 year old O/S on a new machine is beyond me! Vista is a fantastic O/S that had its reputation ruined by a few idiots in the media saying how awful it is. I'm just hoping 7's reputation isn't ruined in the same way as its shaping up to be a very nice O/S .

I have to admit when i first got Vista around 18 months or so back i stuck it on the pc and hated it. I gave it a couple of weeks and then took it off and sold it. Did'nt even activate it. Made £45 on that though as i only paid a tenner. :D

I now have Vista Home Premium, again, but 64 bit on one hard drive and XP on another. The last few weeks i have hardly used XP on my gaming pc and use Vista constantly. I have tweaked and trimmed it down to meet my needs and i actually like it.

I have XP on my internet/general purpose pc though and i would'nt want Vista on that. In it's full form it's far too bloated and to trime it down would make too many compromises.

Totally incorrect. Users can downgrade to XP as long as their licence allows it, most likely the Ultimate and business editions of 7.

Sure about that?

All OEM machines we buy now are with "XP" on as a Vista Downgrade or come with XP Downgrade DVDs to let the end-user do it.

We cannot buy systems from HP with XP on, as XP for example. I believe anything shipping like this is left-over stock.

xp has had updates through out the years and has become pretty stable and very fast.
i use it more often than vista quite simply because it does everything faster(on my pc).

This.

I hate even using XP now - luckily both my home PC (not the server though) and my work system have Vista 64 installed.

I'm a solid XP user and only entertained the idea of moving to vista for about 10 minutes after vista was originally launched.

Because of our network and antivirus programs, running vista at work would cause more trouble than it would be worth and because I use XP at work all day I have XP on all 3 of my machines at home.

I'm very interested in Win 7. I can see a time when I'll make the move, however that wouldn't be before SP1 is released.

I was under the impression that Microsoft had stopped supporting XP for new devices (they won't make drivers for new products unless paid for by the device manufacture) at the end of April.

I could be wrong..... :)

For work environments I can understand why XP might be requested as most software used by business' is extremely expensive to upgrade and are rarely updated. Heck, at my work we're only just 'upgrading' to XP from 2000 Pro. For home users however I still think there's no genuine reason to downgrade to XP from W7. I doubt many do due to the hassle though. Not a lot of the general public know what formatting and reinstalling the O/S is let alone how to do it

here BBC News: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7991708.stm

MS still no say when the final release as it still mentioned as 2010 not 2009 - that what I think it more likely to be 2010 to give it time for MS team to build up before it ready to put into market - cannot make too hurry.

the RC will come up in May and Vista SP2 coming very soon plus Office 2007 SP2 as well. both new Win 7 and Office 14 will come together in 2010 - I buy one for myself and dad.
