Have a customer I built a new machine for around a month ago, paid for a new Windows 7 Ultimate OEM CD-Rom and all parts...

He just called me to say someone 'from Microsoft' called them this evening to say there's a spyware problem on their computer and that windows wasn't genuine. They've put him off and he's calling back within half an hour and they're going to give him my number...

I'm 100% sure the windows is genuine as i bought it from OCUK and it looked completely legitimate.

What's worrying me is this guy calling them out of the blue, where's he got their phone number from and as far as i'm aware Microsoft don't do anything like this, the only name they've been given is he's from a company called CFL Online, who i can't find anything about, which leads me to think this is some kind of malware scam!?

Its a common scam. Next thing they will be doing is trying to get him to install software that gives them a backdoor to his PC.

Think that's happened (it was his girlfriend who took the original call) as his machine has just come up with 'Advanced System Optimiser' and opened websites immediately after he's logged on... I'll be going over tomorrow myself to have a look and sort it out!

Really really weird that they'd actually contact them by telephone?! The only place they can have got the number is from harvesting it from documents?!

Scary... If i can get the telephone number the guy called from can i do anything?

They usually get lists of telephone numbers from various dodgy sources - quite a lot get leaked from india call centers, etc.

He should make sure no financial data, etc. is on the PC as thats the first thing they will go after.

Not much you can do with the telephone number, they are fly by night outfits within a week they won't be operating from the same place.

Kinda reassuring they didn't get back in contact, the PC is now off until i get to look at it tomorrow! Good scan with Kaspersky and CureIt should solve it? Or what other anti-malware programs are the best right now?

I'd normally use Malwarebytes, HijackThis and Security Task Manager... But it's a year or 2 since i cleared a nasty infection...
