not the most helpful of titles but I didnt know how else to explain it.

A friend of mine is running Visat with only a 1gig ram stick in his machine, he is also running a 2gb usb flash drive plugged into the back of his machine.

Now this piece of software uses the 2gb disk for virtual memory, so like it sees 3 gig of ram in total.

Or have I got this wrong completely, didnt understand it when he told me.

They are talking about Readyboost
 
It will speed up the starting of apps to a degree, pen drives are cheap these days, but make sure its ready boost compatible. You are better off with more DDR ram tbh as that would improve gaming and switching apps
