In the massive vista thread I mentioned that Oblivion was running slowly on Vista. I had done an upgrade, and was complaining generally about the slowness of Vista compared to XP. But it was really late. I have installed a fresh install and Vista is now running faster than XP.

However Oblivion still runs slowly. Reading on the microsoft.windows.vista.games newsgroup iit appears I am not the only one to have this problem with oblivion.

"The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - Version 1.1 (Performance is poor compared to
how it ran under Windows XP)" - Mike Gillingham

"Elder Scrolls 4 keeps crashing on me... can't get more than 2 minutes into
playing before it dies. Worked 100% on XP. Any ideas on how to make it
better?" - Bscoug.

Perhaps it is a compatability problem. I think a patch will solve. I havent tried any other games as yet, but I will post back on here when I do. Has anyone tried any games and come accross any issues?

well since its a beta os we are lucky anything at all made for xp works on it :) . not tried oblivion yet but stuff ive tried and works is: WoW, 3dmark03, 3dmark05, need for speed most wanted, warcraft 3 and CSS. all work fine, WoW runs better than XP, so does warcraft 3 and CSS. my 3Dmark03 score was down by 2000 on vista though, but im blaming the naff MS drivers im currently using for that

correct me if im wrong, but i thought Vista was supposed to have some kind of mode where when you run a full screen application it would shut down the main part of the OS and put all the running power and resources into running the application, so you wouldnt have the OS staying dorment in the background/

WOW - I haven't heard that before, but it does make a great deal of sense. At the moment, if I want to give a game/etc full resources, I go and shut down all the Services and terminate unecessary threads in Task Manager, this gives the app all the windows rescources and CPU cycles available. Though this does work pretty well, it can be a right pain in the butt to do time and time again. This new Vista feature would certianly do away with that. And I suppose you could leave all your apps/ie windows/stuff running in backgound as they would not actually be using any resources whilst the game/app is running !!! NICE :D

this is true, but will only be available in one of the top versions of vista, the one designed for us gamers i believe
I find that a little hard to Believe :D

Does bf2 work on vista and will it fit on a 6gb spare drive I have.

Enditall is usefull for ending useless background programs, dont think it does services there are programs which do that automatically though

Don't take this the wrong way, but please, if your going to quote something make sure its the right person your quoting.

So the credit is due to Bscoug. Beleive me, Oblivion does not work 100% for me on XP. Its just thats its a lot slower on Vista.

Oh, and before any one else tells me, but its a beta, let me assure them - I know. And what I am doing by reporting issues such as the one mentioned is BETA testing.

Sorry for coming accross a bit petulant. Im tired and grumpy, and I guess I aught to go to bed, before I become pedantic.

While CSS was running I had massive amounts of flickering and graphical glitches, let me see through walls and doors sometimes  Felt like a right r33t hacker.

This is using the nVidia Vista 64bit drivers, might install Vista 32bit.

I really hope it does automatically shut down the os part as just on the desktop with the side bar open i lose nearly 400 mb of memory!!!! also its still very cpu intensive although it feels very buggy still.

They have a way to go yet I think

Beta testing ver 2 32 bit.

Vista is very nice though, although die hard gamers will us xp unless they can fix the memory / cpu usage for games.

I've tried a few games on Vista, noteably Live for Speed, under XP with the latest Catalysts I get on average 180-200fps with full AA and AF @ 1680 x 1050 (adaptive AA turned off), with Vista I get less than 100fps, even with everything turned off.

Its debug code, what do you expect? Once the code is written and tested, and bugs fixed, the work will begin on optimising it (and I'd be surprised if this hasn't already begun).

Is there a reliable source for vista downloads, I know about the microsoft one but that is presently telling me there is no such file when I tried to resume it using getright. I have 16% so far, Iam on a slow dsl link

Theres also a BT I found but no one actually has the complete file online so that doesnt exactly bode well
