i have one question... is the retail version build 6.0.6000.16386?

RTM was/is 6000.16386 so I assume retail would be the same yes.

Yes it will be, they are just different SKU's of the same build.

IIRC the 6.0 part means that it's effectively "NT 6.0" (where XP was 5.0).

The 6000 bit is the final build.

The last five digits, i'm not sure what they are, and it's unlikely they matter.

If you goto system information you can find out the build.

Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.0.6000.16386"

The 16386 is called the winmain branch. At Release candidate level a new winmain branch was created and this was 16385, therefore 16386 designates the RTM winmain branch. All builds of vista considered for RTM or RTM escrow came from this branch. There should be more numbers after that part and that is the compile date.

All the versions on sale are RTM (although people say the code has been tweaked since RTM), hence the name Release to Manufacturer.

OcUK are selling early and all the official copies of Vista from a retailer will be RTM, until the release of a servicepack.

RTM means Release to Manufacturing, i.e the finished product.

Every single copy of Vista is taken from this final version and will remain identical unless MS includes any future service packs somewhere down the line.

It's ALWAYS final. Xp was final, Windows 2000 was final, etc.

There's no point in bugfixing then releasing the non-bugfixed product?
