Windows Vista Full Licence Question

I purchased an Acer 5738z with Windows Vista a few days ago.
Everything is fine with the Laptop, accept the Product Key Number is invalid.

I validated the trail for the Windows Applications i.e Word, Excel etc which as per the note on the screen runs out in January 2010, rather than in 30 days.

The product key I was using before I validated the trail period, was the one quoted on the bottom of the laptop as i thought that was correct, however this was not the case.

I rang Microsoft and I was advised that I will need to purchase a full licence or risk losing all my information..!! They told me I could back my information up but thats not the point. This feature comes with the laptop anyway.

When i bought this laptop, i thought Windows Vista was fully functional and there would be no issues... I am currently on my desktop as i need to install other things on my Acer before i can fully use it.

I don't think its right that people have to purchase a Full Licence.

Can anyone help me as i am new to Vista and Laptops

Thank you

Didn't you purchase it with an OEM version of Vista? have you installed Vista ultimate or something rather than the version you had before? Something seems a little odd here.

According to the Spec it comes with Windows Vista pre installed and 60 days free trail of Microsoft Office.... Doesn't mention anything about purchasing a full licence!!

I have a feeling, please tell me if iam wrong, but, are you mixing up the code on the back of the computer as in the OEM sticker, which has the keycode for vista, and you are trying to input that code for use in Office?

I think you are confusing Vista and Office 2007 To keep you office 2007 running past the 60 day trial you will need to buy a copy or a license key. Your laptop should be fully activated. The license key on the bottom of the laptop is for Vista not office

To keep Office running you need to purchase an Office Medialess Licence Kit (MLK) which will give you a full licence. Vista is different and you are fully licensed for that as there are no trial versions of Vista.

:o oh dear... i thought that was the product key number to keep office running. I feel stupid asking these sort of questions as this is the first time i have ever bought a laptop and i thought everything came ready to go.
Do you know how much this Licence is?
Thanks for replying everyone.
