I was helping a friend build his new pc:

(dualcore 8500, Asus P5Q-E Intel P45, gtx 260, antec 900,corsair 620,tuniq tower 120,WD 500AAKS, G Skill 4gig 2x2,sony sata dvd drive,vista home premium 32bit, )

Turned it on and started installing vista, the vista setup returned a message saying a file could not be copied due to being corrupt.

Restarted

Now it says BOOTMGR error, press ctrl+alt+del. You do that and you just get the same thing.

I've put the drive in my pc to reformate it, but if I put it back in his pc after its formated and start the vista install again, will the same problem occur?

Check the Vista CD for scratches or marks, or it could be the cd drive you're using causing the fault.
It may also be faulty ram, check its configured correctly in the bios.

the vista cd has a massive scratch on it, would this of happened by having the pc on and on its side instead of vertical?

Also I have never used a sata dvd drive before, it appears to be working since we got into the vista install, but do any settings need to be changed in bios?

With regards to RAM, I will try to install after the drive is formated with just 1 stick instead of 2.

no

what i'd do..

use this program on a working pc, to copy the vista dvd to C:\VISTADVD http://www.roadkil.net/program.php?ProgramID=29

leave it for ages, it'll probably copy the damaged file(s), turn the log mode on so it tells you which ones it can't copy, as long as it's not one of the massive *.wim files i'll upload any missing files for you. (it may copy fine with that program)

you can then use vlite to recreate the disc (don't select any other options in vlite, just make the disc)

the scratch is the problem

Cheers fella, i'm at work atm, but I will give it a go later. This scratch runs around the entire disc, its long and deep.

Really annoying since it was brand new yesturday and taken out of the case and put in the drive. I guess it needs to be sent back if the above method does not work!?

yeah, or just 'get' a new one

i'd test a cd-r with data on it in the drive incase it's causing the damage

Thats a good idea, I was wondering if it could have been the drive scratching the disk. With regards to "get a new one", could you give me your email? or msn? its probably easier and more appropriate to talk off the forums.

Its the 32bit disc, I have the 64bit but I take it this will be a completely different disk? Dont really know anyone with 32bit vista around here.
