WINDOWS VISTA STUDENT

Just installing Vista Business 64 bit edition - I'm on an I.T. course and got it for free via the MSDNAA scheme, check if you're able to get it via your Uni.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but do you have any more info on this? Is it through Microsoft or each individual uni? and do you have to be on a specific course?

I think he's talking about 'MSDN Academic Alliance'.
You have to take one of these course:

(I might be wrong on this)

Search for your Uni here: http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchIntl.aspx

EDIT: Didn't see wozzizname's post.

Ah unfortunately it looks like my course isn't applicable then as I am doing engineering :(

Is it the home basic edition for £50?

Check anyway - I did Engineering but it was available on my course in my Uni (Uni specific though)

Otherwise I've seen Home Basic for £50 but it's not great - I'd stretch to Home Premium/Business personally

It's still possible to buy an academic version if you can't get vista from MSDN:AA - My uni (university of edinburgh) only has it for the informatics department. I'm studying maths so wasn't applicable for MSDN:AA - I bought Vista Home Premium Academic Upgrade version for about £65 just after release - I can't say where from though, as it's a competitor.

Go to the IT department and ask. I got it as Im on a business/computing course, but they will generally give it to anyone. A mate got it because hes on business but has one of his tutorials in a room that technically in a school of computing building... lol.

You may also be able to get office 2007 for either free from the uni or for £17 odd from MS.

Is Vista Home Premium OEM meant for a clean install? Or can it be upgarded from XP?

If a clean install would formatting the HDD be needed?

Thanks.

OEM is meant for a cleam install. If i remember correctly the upgrade option is removed...

Yes you will always want to instal a new OS onto a clean hard drive. This doesnt mean you need a completely formatted drive though, just a partition. You can partition your drive up and stick all your data on one drive, format the other then install Vista on that. PErsonally over got 6 partitions accross 3 physical drives. One for Vista, one for XP, one with all my documents and dowloads and data on it, one with all my games installed on it, a backup drive and a media drive. It means I can just wipe the Vista or XP drive, clean install the OS, and not have to worry about loosing all my data.
