Windows Vista Ultimate 64-BIT. How will my PC handle it?

Hello guys.

First of all my system specs are : C2D E4600, 2GB DDR2 Ram, HD3870 512MB, 160GB HDD.

I've wanted to use Vista for a while but wasn't quite sure if 2GB of RAM was up to it.

Should my PC be able to handle vista with just 2GB of ram?

I will be doing some moderate gaming, I'm not sure if this will take an affect on gaming performance.

Any information is appreciated.

Cheers.

It should be ok, though (others might be able to confirm) that 4GB would help it slightly more snappy. You can pick up a kit of DDR26400 for around £35 delivered :)

Works absolutely fine with 2Gb of ram. I had to remove 2Gb of my 4 recently and was very surprised to feel no difference for most tasks. Gaming was also not an issue.

For the long term though, getting Superfetch working to capacity etc, 4Gb is reccommended, especially considering how cheap it is.

Quite confused - is something that happens automatically post boot? Or do I have to enable it?

Superfetch is automatically on and over the coming weekends will learn what you use and pre cache the most popular. Using most of your available ram. But as non of the information has to be saved again. It can release that ram instantly when you fire up a game or other software.

As has been said before free ram is pointless ram.

Only 940? That will go up after superfetch sorts itself out.

Burnsy

I don't think superfetch really shows up in the main memory usage section of the task manager.

Currently mine says it's using 2.05GB (I have 4GB in my PC), but you can see it's using 2993MB for Superfetch:

It's weird... you can see 2993MB of the overall memory has been used for superfetch meaning only around 1GB is being used for Windows services & my applications. Why is it showing 2.05GB used in the main section

Also something else a bit weird is the fact that when I start the PC up, after it's finished superfetching the RAM usage is about 30%, that then gradually increases to 50% after about 12 hours of 'on time', it'll then stay at 50%. Would that just be Vista caching stuff like Explorer windows I've opened, and other smaller programs?

I'm pretty sure cached is not the same as superfetch. XP also has cached stuff even when ram isn't fall. Not exactly sure of the difference between ram usage and cached stuff. Isn't it something to do with cached stuff on the hdd?

Depends what you are doing as to whether yo uneed 4GB.

I ran Ultimate 64 with 2GB and it ran fine. But i play LOTRO with high res textures enabled, so needs a lot of RAM and noticed a definate improvement.

Like stated, it's so cheap these days, the question is why not

Cheers for the replys guys. Seems to be running pretty good but I haven't tired many games yet.

I'll end up picking another 2GB of RAM up in the future just for that extra bit. :)

Edit - This might sound like a silly question, and I don't think I'm understanding this fully, but as I said earlier it said my computer was using 900MB Ram, if I was to play a game, would that game only have access to roughly 1GB ram because background tasks are using 900MB?

4GB RAM will help in Vista even if you don't use near 4GB on your own programs as it'll be able to pre-load everything that you use :)

Hopefully someone will develop a tool to monitor Superfetch & program RAM usage sometime. I'd be interested to see what's using what.

Works fine on 1GB!

Hmmmm i'd definitely have to disagree with that, i assumed it would and bought a C2D 2Ghz lappy with 1Gb of mem, and Vista ran dog slow, and i mean total dog slow. Totally awful, i had a lot of bad things to say about vista, until i coughed up extra, and made the jump straight to 4Gb and Jesus the difference it made it incomprehensible, totally new machine, vista is now a breeze to work with and i would think twice about sticking with it, in fact i really wouldn't want to go back to xp!
