(another quick way of checking is look on the C: drive, and see if there are 2x program files folders, on a 64bit system, you'll have one called "program files (x86)" for the 32 bit programs
where did you get the vista from? i think with some you have to pay an extra tenner or so to order the 64bit dvd (you'll have to format using it to install it)
64bit basically means the processor has more data to work with, but at the moment not many programs are optimised for it, in basic terms its kind of like windows having more space to use ram with..

Worked fine when i had vista 32 bit
