About a year ago I had Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition and there were a lot of problems with it which I didn't experience with Home Premium 64 bit edition. I looked into it and I found out that the Ultimate 64 bit edition was the most problematic version of Vista.

I need 64bit for the amount of RAM I'm going to have in my new system but as I have a retail version of Ultimate 64 I was wondering if it has improved?

Sorry your post makes absolutely no sense.
The only difference between the different versions of Vista is their "feature list" - the underlying code is exactly the same between editions.

If something runs on one Vista 64 it will run on another.

There was certainly never a case when Ultimate64 was "more problematic" than any other Vista64 version.
I'm sorry but you did not "find out" that Ultimate 64 was the most problematic version of Vista because that is ********.

Been running Vista 64bit my self for 18 months and never had any problems.
Re-install and upadate to service pack 1.

Don't like your attitude one bit!!

Thanks to everyone else that gave decent responses and suggestions.
I will try it again.

Hahah you don't like his attitude because he told you how it is. Sometimes you don't always like what you hear.

To "everyone else" they were just confirming what he said really. Albeit it a little OTT, he was spot on with his advice.

:)

Well all I'm saying is that when Vista first came out and I was having problems with Ultimate 64, forums were plagued with threads about Ultimate 64 having more problems than the other versions of Vista. Geez....

Well the only thing in my mind that it could be is that when Vista came out (full stop) it was a pain for most people.

Lack of updates/patches/stability/etc probably meant it was unstable for a lot of people's hardware and software requirements. Give it a whirl now and get all the latest gubbins from MS and I'm sure you will have a more pleasant experience :) It has been a few years now!

Have a nice day :D

Maybe because most of the first people buying Vista would have been more technical people and most likely would have went for the Ultimate version?

Which forums?

I've never seen such claims and I've been using Vista Ultimate 32 and 64 since post BETA.

Yeah that's a fair point :D

Anyway I'll give it a whirl and hopefully it will be great :D XP's getting a bit boring lol..

TBH you might as well get the latest build of Windows 7, it expires March 2010 so plenty of time to enjoy a nicer UI with better performance than Vista (on slower machines).

I tried Windows 7 cuz my housemate is a Microsoft Student Partner and got it a few months ago but I don't like the start menu bar, it's too much like Linux. Is there any way to change it to look like Vista?

Yup, properties the start menu and you can set it back to how Vista is but TBH the new bar is the way forward. It's more logical and looking forwards it's way more functional for multitasking many windows and apps at once.

Check out a video I made of it in general use scenario on my netbook:
