Thinking of changing from a genuine copy of xp media center edition to vista home premium.

Would I be better off saving the extra money and just going for the upgrade version of vista?

With the upgrade version of vista, if it does for some reason mess up, can I do a simplre re-install of vista, or do I need to re-install xp media center edition and then vista?

thanks in advance

You have several options really. Yes you are right in the fact that the upgrade copy would cost you less, however unlike previous versions of Windows where you could do a clean install if you inserted the previous O/S disk, Vista requires you to have your previous O/S installed before you can upgrade.

I personally dont like the idea of doing this, because from past experience things have never gone well with Windows upgrades for me.

By the sounds of things if you are running XP Media Centre edition, then your PC sounds as though it isnt too old, therefore there is a good chance that you will not be upgrading it at any point soon? In that case why not just buy Vista Home Premium OEM for £78.00? You can then do a clean install with it, and as long as you dont have any plans to upgrade your motherboard in the near future, then everything would be sweet.

To answer your other question, yes if things went wrong then you would have to install XP MCE, then Vista on top of that. Not worth the hassle as far as im concerned. I'd go for OEM, or retail.

I bought my pc about a week ago now, bought all the components from OCUK and then put it together.

So, its best to just get a full oem or retail version (not hte upgrade one) and then do a clean install?

Yup, to me its a no brainer then. If you have just built your new PC and intend on keeping it for a good while then definatley go for OEM. Even if you change your motherboard in the next 2/3 years and have to buy a new OEM licence, it would only work out £8 more expensive in the long run than buying the retail upgrade version (current price comparison).

I have no experience with the Vista upgrade option. It may be that it will be a lot better than previous O/S's at upgrading, but from past experience i find the whole experience horrible and things never seem to work as seamlessly as they should

At the end of the day only you know what you will be doing with your PC in the future, so buy according to your plans but i advise you buy OEM.

Hope thats been of some help :)
