I have a copy of Windows XP pro from my university and it's the MSDN version (I don't know if this is legit or not). Anyway - will this work if I try to install Vista Home Premium? I know XP upgrade asks you to insert say an ME disk and it works. Other than that my mum's partner has a copy of XP home upgrade version - would that work?

I have an MSDN version of XP as well and i see no reason why the upgrade shouldnt work. from what i remember, what you download from MSDN is a .iso file which you need to either burn to cd or open in daemon/alcohol. either way you can make a cd

Lets talk legal for a second.
Neither of the versions you have listed will allow you to buy an Upgrade to Vista for your own machine and actually be license legal.
As you are now allowed to talk about illegal things on these forums that is really as far as that discussion needs to go.

what do you mean? do you know what MSDN is? in my case it most certainly is not illegal. my university has a setup with them that allows us to download microsoft software......

MSDN is The Microsoft Developer Network afaik downloaded software from MSDN is not allowed to be used in a productive enviroment, and Im pretty sure Microsoft would consider a Home PC in that catorgory.

It's not worth buying the upgrade anyway, if you're an MSDN subscriber or have access to MSDN then should you be entitled to use Vista, a version will be made available online for you.

quoting from an email i got when i started uni:

Hello,

Welcome! You have been registered in your university/college ELMS
for MSDNAA online software system. Here you can download and
access a wide range of Microsoft developer tools, servers, and
platforms. There is no charge to download the software as long
as you are an eligible user in the System.

How Does it Work?

Your university/college is licensed under the MSDN Academic
Alliance Program which enables eligible students and faculty
members to access software available under the Program. e-academy
Inc., a partner of Microsoft, is providing ELMS for MSDNAA to you.
Simply log into the System using your username and password
included below and start browsing/ordering the software
available to you.

ahh MSDNAA I think its slighty different, it allows 'current Students' to use the software free of charge for coursework, personal, non comerical I beleive

That is interesting. I may have to look into that.

That's the basics of the scheme.

No, the MSDN version of XP will not qualify as an upgrade product, neither will the other upgrade version. You need an OEM or retail licence to upgrade from.
