My key dosent work now ive upgraded my pcs motherboard and cpu etc. Ive had this in the past with windows, will i have to ring up? what will i say?

there is a automated service you can use,i do this when i change over boards.

You dont have to speak to anyone and its a free call.

That worked thanks. Was strangest thing having to write down all those numbers, will i have to do this everytime i install windows?

If it's too frequent or with too many core hardware changes, yes.

I presume you only have an OEM copy of Windows, not retail?

Not sure tbh, my digital reciept says nothing of OEM. It was the £25 upgrade offer at the time, I got for £15! probably OEM im guessing.

Ah ok sorry that is retail then.

It's likely just the large hardware change that triggered the system as the hardware ID would be different to the last activation.

You will have to do the call every time you install windows or upgrade your motherboard.

I have the same £15 windows.

We have only needed to do that once and IIRC it was when I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 ISO, having previously had Windows 8. It got a little messy, and probably helped to prompt the need for the phone call, as it was a little hazy at the time on how to do a clean install of W8.1 and thus I was trying lots of things to get it to work.
Since then on every fresh install involving any of the four machines we bought the £15 copy Windows 8 for we have not needed to do it.
I have just used a generic Windows 8.1 key and then changed that to my own once installed.
