hey,

my mate's PC is pretty fooked. from pressing the power button, it takes literally 20 minutes to get to the user profile select screen, and then it just seems to freeze. It started yesterday, and he hasn't been able to log on at all.

I checked everything inside, sata cables are all properly connected, he hasn't had an upgrade in ages so I think it's a software issue, maybe a virus. Could anyone help me out?

His specs (if relevant)

3.06ghz P4 Prescott
1gb DDR2 RAM
Gigabyte mobo of some kind..
200gb Seagate barracuda
nvidia 6200 (lol)

thanks in advance

how can he? he said it won't boot... :)
It's booting to a point if he's getting user profiles select screen up :p
Pushing F8 during the P.O.S.T gives you the choice to rollback to last know good configuration. Worth a shot as it's bailed me out plenty with gash drivers the OS doesn't like :D
Maybe I should have said during boot :o

My mate doesn't have an XP disc and neither do I (vista). He will have to get a copy then? Packard Bell didn't include a system recovery disc either.
I tried to boot in safe mode but it froze then as well.

Can anyone help? I would like to avoid buying a new cd if possible!

thanks

indeed it did :) It's now working, had to wipe the HD, but it's working. However it's slow and keeps freezing, takes about 2 mins to boot. How do I fix this?
