Windows won't load desktop

My computer was working fine yesterday, shut down last night and now this morning it gets stuck after clicking on a user login and typing the password.

The desktop doesn't load and the keyboard becomes unresponsive, have to do a hard restart. It does load in safe mode but as I don't know what the problem is, I don't know what to fix.

I'm not even sure where to start.

Any ideas?

Hmmm, if it works in safe mode it could indicate a driver or something has become corrupt. Can you reinstall the drivers of any devices? Video card being the first culprit I can think of.

It may be a repair of windows is needed though.

Ah thanks I tried an older system restore and it started working again.

Odd because I haven't changed anything, no drivers or apps or anything in days.
