Hi,
last night I was on safari watching iplayer and downloading a file. I decided to cancel the dl and turn the computer off. Unfortunately nothing seemed to work. I could close safari but the computer just locked when I asked it to open anything. Ctrl+alt+del didn't work and pressing shutdown had no effect. In the end I hard powered off.
This morning the problem is worse. Windows gets past the loading screen only to sit on a blank screen with the mouse, with no desktop. Safe mode has the same effect, as does last known config.
No idea what's happened.

Any help much appreciated!

I'm running XP Pro.

Reset your BIOS to standard and even try resetting the CMOS.

Unplug everything apart from the monitor and try again. Swap out your RAM and use onboard graphics if your mobo has one.

It sounds like a hardware fault so you will need to check each piece of equipment.

Try booting from the Windows CD and selecting R at the first screen. When you have access to the command prompt, type "fixboot" then press "enter"
Type "fixmbr" the press "enter", type "chkdsk" then press "enter"
(without the quotes of course)

Got a backup? I keep a 1week old copy of windows on a spare drive. Then just clone back, takes around 10 minutes to clone from one to another

Cheers for the advice. Found my windows disc, tried to repair, asked for my admin password, dont have one, slaved the drive and tried registry hack, no avail.

Copied my docs to other HD and reformatted. Nice fresh windows install is a positive I suppose!
