WOW just install this on to this:

MSI Neo2-p
x2 3800 @ 2.95Ghz
200gb WD SATA
2GB Ram

does this fly or what, so much more responsive than normal windows imho.
seems like i will be fiddling with this for the next few days. :)
who else is using this?

I've worked with x64 windows before and not such a big fan here. It seems very bodged togeter at the moment, another on of M$ "lets throw together a OS and say that its ready and complete it 3 months later with updates"

I'm no anti Microsoft critic, I like there stuff. You've got to admit they have a tendancy to release unfinished products tho.

I don't believe that's true in this case. XP x64 has behaved admirably in the 6 months I've been using it. I just hope Vista x64 is a worthy successor and is as stable.

Appologies if you thought the above comment was meant for you which it wasnt.

But yes they do release some products which i would appear to be unfinished but if you take into account the ammount of people using Windows you can understand a few mistakes due to shear ammount of testing required to cover the Windows user base which the last time i saw it was arround the 5-600 Million mark.

No company not even Microsoft has the capabilities to test there software on 500 Millions different implementations of hardware which i believe that should be down to main OEM distributers like HP and Dell to test compatability with there selected hardware.

Microsoft are getting better with patch release times, service packs and updates for there present OS releases but i would like to see more Beta versions of there products released to everyone not just MSDN subscribers and third party vendors, it would definatly spot bugs more quickly.

i ve worked with win 32bit and win 64bit an the same machine and i can say that x64 are more responsive(no slowdowns or freezes etc).
In raw gaming performance there is no noticable difference(in fact i think x64 are a "fraction" slower than 32bit)

If the game is a 32bit app it may well not be optimised to fully utilise x64 standards.

Definately. Its hard to release betas of Microsoft products surely because of the value of them to the company, the second the program gets leaked thats a large CHUNK of there profit from that venture gone.

And I do agree with the fact that Microsoft are getting better at releasing well made programs and service packs. If you look back at the OS releases by microsoft, ALL operating systems are at their height before they get discontinued...with the exception of ME which was just a blip IMO. Win98 = Good if your PC can't take 2000. Win 2000 = Good, reliable, compatible etc. Windows XP - industry standard, user friendly, efficient, stable.

The only issue I have with upcoming Vista (or whatever the release it as) is its segregation of OS types. With XP there was Pro and Home, Home being cut down and undomainable (first MS OS not able to..) and with Vista there going mad with that kinda thing, theres about 4/5 different versions last time I checked. :(

Well your in luck theres going to be 5 versions of Vista..

Personally Ultimate Vista sounds quite catchy to me.

:D

Would the "Basic" edition be best for just gaming? I am a bit wary that all these features in other editions are just bloatware and will lead to the OS being marginally slower?

Indeed im just worried about the retake of my MCP exam for Vista from XP or should i say exams!

Yeah that's my thoughts too. What are people running Vista on at the moment (I know it's Beta) as I'm due to upgrade my PC in the coming months, looking at the Shuttle Route.

whats windows 64 like for drivers now? I dont use anything other a samsung laser printer but I do fancy putting it on when I do a fresh install shortly. Ive heard microsoft do a full version of x64 with a 6 month trial period to download, i havent checked yet but someone told me about it today at work
