so today i decided to put xp on my pc, after using win2000 for some time.

im having troubles with some of my mp3's though. i try to play them and they just wont play. they open up ok in winamp and WMP, with WMP reporting that i dont have the correct codecs for this file.

thing is, some mp3s on the same drive do work. the drive is ntfs and xp did have to scan after i hard powered down my pc and turned it back ok, saying stuff like recovering orphaned file...

can anyone help me? or have a lost a big chunk of good music? =(

edit - just found out its happened to some avi files i have too

Did you do a clean install of XP, or an upgrade on top of 2000? Something's amiss because just hard shutting down your PC shouldn't cause file corruption on an NTFS partition.

I've found that's just how WMP is, bringing up codec errors... Try Winamp or another MP3 player to see if that helps. I was having to play some of my songs in Creative MediaSource till I got sick of WMP10 and just installed Winamp. Wish I had have done all along.

it was a full install of XP, not an upgrade. i sent a file to my mate, he couldnt play it.

i didnt make myself too clear, the files open in winamp and WMP, but BOTH wont play it and only WMP shows an error message.
