Windows XP boots up but freezes?

hi am running Windows XP and everytime i boot up windows loads but i can't carry out any tasks. It just freezes completely. I can't open system resources, i can't restart, i have to switch off with the power button, anybody got any ideas of what is up?

try going into safe mode, f8 @bootup. then type msconfig in "run" and see wats booting, u can tick a box which will start windows with basic, no programs.
