Windows XP bow out?

Hardly a huge surprise. After a year of its introduction, it'd be unlikely for anyone to want a new PC preinstalled with XP.

Big business would buy PCs with no OS and install their own images (hence some still use Windows 2000 even though Windows 2000 isn't available preinstalled anymore.

Not surprising really. Microsoft withdrew previous OSes from sale much quicker once they were superceded. Support on the other hand is a completely different matter :) XP support goes on to 2012 IIRC.

Funny how the media acts like this is the first time Microsoft has withdrawn an outdated OS from sale :p

Most vendors will be wrapping up their Vista driver rollout programmes by mid-Summer in fact.
And if you ain't got your drivers out, you ain't going to get your hardware sold in OEM PCs.

Creative already have experienced this when Vista was first released. Their drivers didn't work, so PCs weren't sold with Creative cards as an option.

Exactly. Sooner or later Creative will learn their lesson. They do this everytime Microsoft launches a new OS. With on-board sound being so good these days they just lost out on a lot of business too. I was touch and go myself on whether to get a X-Fi or not but I just couldn't be bothered to relive the whole SBLive! w/ XP RTM experience again!

I bought an XFI when I was using an older motherboard with onboard AC97 audio. However my newer board's Realtek HD audio is good to the point I haven't bothered reinstalling the XFI. It now sits in a box, waiting for the day that Creative release a decent driver/software package that works better than 'inferior' onboard solutions. Oh, and a driver release cycle that isn't once or twice a year if you're lucky.

So Creative aren't going to release any drivers for Vista for their older soundcards then? I have an old SBLive! that I still use in my rig, if I go to Vista I'll have to junk it?

Creative have said they won't be releasing any SBLive! drivers for Vista. I think there might be a compatibility one provided by Microsoft but I'm not sure and even if there is don't expect games to like it too much.
