has anyone found a step by step guide on how to

allow a windows xp machine to connect to a windows 7 share...

in the past i have connected windows 7 to xp shares which works fine, but now I must get it to work the other way round...

i have tried several giudes, most suggest different things, and most where peopel can comment have lots of people who cannot get it to work...

i can get it to the point where xp asks for a username and password to connect to w7 but even if i give it the username and password of a w7 account it simply asks for the info again... - the same sort of thing that xp to vista did until you change the lmsecurity reg key..

thanks in advance for any nfo

as in a shared folder on windows 7 that you want to connect to from XP?

yes, buggered if i can make it work... can connect the other way round easily... but xp keeps asking for a username and passowrd to connect to the windows 7 share

i have tried..

1) enabling the guest account
2) creating an accmunt with a password thats an admin (nd not an admin)
3) the share is everone and guest full control, she folder is the same
4) in the UI change it from 128bit to 56?bit encryption ( well the lower security in the advanced properties of the network sharing center)
5) turning on password protected sharing
6) workgroups are the same name ( not that it should matter)

the lmcompatibility reg key is set to 1 (the default setting)

Is your XP up to date (including recommended updates)? I believe there was an update quite a while ago now that was to do with this issue. I've never been able to get it to work if it doesn't work immediately.

The other thing to make sure of is point 6 up there, the workgroups have to be the same, certainly in my experience anyway. The default workgroup name in XP and 7 isn't the same.

i had a go myself and it seems i could access a windows 7 shared folder using XP, from a completely different workgroup .

I did a very simple setup, set read access to wakest possible permissions (i.e.everyone). Then no problems accessing from XP. Then used slightly stronger permissions and had no trouble again.

Although i later realised that i was using exactly the same credentials on each computer so that might have had something to do with it :o But even using a different set didnt make any difference :(

I didnt do anything advanced/without common sense so i'm not sure what to suggest at this point other than what alexhull said about the updates :(

Having identical credentials on each computer is the best way to have a peer to peer network.

Check in the Windows 7 Network and Sharing centre that you have network discovery and things on. Try rebooting the XP machine too - sometimes when you make a change on one computer, the other one doesn't always take any notice.
