Hi Folks,

Following on from this thread here I am trying to understand what went wrong with my install of Windows XP home. Since the above thread I have reinstalled windows and am currently in the process of reinstalling all of my software again but now I am extremely warey of installing windows updates as they were the last thing I installed by my PC wouldn't load. Are the windows updates absolutely neccesary or can I just turn them off from the outset?

is there a particular update that is know to cause problem and if so how do I avoid it?

Thanks

Matthew

I would say its pretty important to update as many of them are security issues. I always install the OS, drivers then update fully before putting any software on. I always set the updates to download and then let me install, I then check them and see if they want to install any updates for my hardware, if thats the case I generally exclude those and update from the hardware manufacturers website if I feel its needed.

Either it was just coincidence and you've got a bigger problem or your install was broken (some system file missing or corrupt probably) and the update just triggered whatever problem there was.
