To summarise XP does the file copy in a cached mode then dismisses the File Copy dialog before it commits the cache to disc. Vista on the other hand waits till this commit has been completed, also, it's calculating of the copy time is speed sensitive so what does a lot of updating.
My point? what is actually underneath is the same speed as ever it's just your perception of it.
