Windows XP installation problems

I've been trying to install XP onto a build I put together out of old parts (actaully it's basically my previous build in an older case) but I'm getting errors during the installation. It's the same XP disk I've used for my last 3 builds. Never ahd this problem before. Last used this disk about 6 weeks ago to install XP onto my current build. No problems then. Any ideas what this means?

Could be a faulty CD, memory or even hard drive.
Swap the Cd or CD drive. Test the memory with Memtest.

Go from there.

The easiest thing for me to test would be another XP CD but I don't know anyone that has one I could borrow. I'm kicking myself now for not making a back copy of my XP CD.

From this it sounds like a could be a number of errors all to do with the device being read i.e. the DVD drive.

I'll dry cleaning the DVD drive & making a copy of my XP disk. See if that makes a difference.

CRC errors can be caused by bad IDE cables, try replacing the IDE cable or put the drive on another channel.

I'll try changing the IDE cable.

How do you put the drive on another channel? I presume it's in the BIOS somewhere?

By moving the actual IDE cable on the motherboard from one connector to another, if the motherboard has a second IDE connector.

I presume you have a second PC that your using to post here. Maybe take the CD/DVD drive out of that and use it to test the second pc

This error message could be generated by any of the below reasons.

During the transmission of the file it became corrupt or bad
The file was sent inappropriately
The device being opened from is bad or contains errors
The file itself is bad or the program attempting to open the file is bad.

I'll try that. I do have 2 IDE connectors. The IDE HD is on one & the DVD drive the other. Can I try just swapping these round? At the moment the HD is on IDE 1.

Actually the PC I'm on now has two drives - a DVD burner & a CD burner. Bit pointles really. I might just take the CD burner out & install it in the other PC periminently ...... if I get it up & running that is.

Okay, I've tried a different optical drive, different IDE cables, different IDE channels - with the cables round a certain way (think it was optical to IDE1, HD to IDE2) the thing didn't even post. Every other combination/test gave the same results. I changed the RAM as well. I also made a copy of my XP disk & tried that. Exact same thing.

I got a copy of XP from a mate to try. Worked first time. So my XP disk must be borked.

if your mates disc is a different version, then when in windows, use unstoppable copier to copy your disc to C\xpcd, and tell copier to keep a log, it'll tell you which files it failed to copy, hopefully they'll be ones on your mate's disc, or we can help you out

then use nlite to make a new disc from that folder

He doesn't mind.

But I'll look into the unstoppable copier thing (never heard of that before). Be interesting to try that.

it's pretty handy for copying things from cd's or over a slow network, you see each file copy

sort of like a nice frontend for an ftp type transfer i guess
