My wife's hd has died on her office desktop, and until Win7 arrives, we're going to install XP for a couple of months, on a new HD.

I am thinking about temporarily connecting the new HD to my vista machine, installing XP, browser, anti virus etc, but no hardware drivers and then when I go to her office next week connecting the HD into her machine and just adding her specific hardware drivers - will this work? or will the xp installation be unstable?

The reason for not doing it fresh at her office is lack of time etc.

XP will install drivers and configure itself accordingly, so no, unless your hardware is very similar it wouldn't be a good idea.

Best solution if you don't want to spend time at her office would be for her unplug everything and bring the base unit home.
