Ok have a really strange problem with xp.

I formatted my pc yesterday morning and installed XP Home SP2.

Now the first problem, was norton. It wanted me to restart to complete the installation. However, whenever i restarted it came up with the message over and over again.

I ended up booting into safe mode, tried to load norton but norton crashed. Rebooted into windows, problem solved.

It seems the problem is happening all the time.

With xfire, every time i start it up, it brings up a window about adding or inviting friends to xfire. I uninstalled it and reinstalled which solved the problem.

It now seems to be happening everytime i start cod2/ cod uo up. It seems to think ive changed my hardware in someway, so pops up the message about auto detecting settings.

What is going on here

Edit spec:

AMD 64 X2 4400 @ stock
Asus A8N Sli Deluxe
Connect 3D X1900XTX 512mb @ stock
2 x 1GB Corsair XMS DDR 500 @ stock
2 x 120gb Seagate Baracuda (.7 or .8 i think) S-ATA (One with windows, the other with games on.

Before i formatted, everything was the same except i had my hard drives in Raid 0 array and i had an AMD 64 3200 winchester @ 2.6ghz instead of the x2

Personally I'd just byte the bullet and reformat it. Yep its a pain, but your getting some very odd issues. And it'll probably be quicker than chasing all these different faults.

i agree

il install norton, because for me its fine.

norton isnt causing the problem btw, its something else not sure what tho. Will probably format when i have time

do this test...

with norton on, copy the files from your xp disc to C:\xpcd

now do it with norton off, the copy rate difference is huge

-look in task manager, see how many processes are running because of norton? each one slows your pc down

since you've got decent hardware, why hamper it with crap software

any other ideas apart from format and dont install norton

ive got my games on one drive, with windows and programs on the other (norton, xfire, msn, teamspeak etc)

whats the easiest way of sorting it out so once ive formatted, its as if ive installed the programs again. Can i just copy my start menu programs list

why do people insist on using norton......

its total and utter ****

just get rid of it, the world is a better place without rubbish like that.

AND I QUOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It really annoys me when people moan about norton or whatever, this is not a thread complaining about norton, i havnt asked how to remove norton.

ARGH!

how is it the cause of my problems

how is it causing cod2 and cod uo to think my hardware has been changed every time i start it up. How does it make xfire think im starting it up for the first time.

Norton is the worst piece of software to grace any computer ever, buy NOD32.

Finally got my friend to ditch Norton and he said his machine was sooooo much faster.

(Yes I know it's off topic but I don't care)

It's Norton, it can't always be explained, it just does these weird things to your system.

it may be annoying you, but we're persistant becuase we know we're right in this case!

regarding the secondary problem (cod2 :p)

have you installed newest drivers for chipset, graphics card, soundcard and also i'd run windows update

there's a tool called 'dxdiag' , do start, run, dxdiag, press enter, see if there's anything regarding any issues in there.

(you did reinstall COD2 yes, and not just copy the programfiles from an older installation of it?)
are there any COD2 patches? might well fix what you're after! can't remember having any problem like you're experiencing when i had it installed

[edit]did you install it to C at first (in this current xp install) and then copy it across to the 2nd drive? or just install it straight to it, as there'll be registry entires that are pointing to the wrong place if you copied it after..[/edit]

do they have their own COD2 forum on the manufacturers website? -this is becoming more and more common with newer games, probably a good place to check

hope it gets sorted :)

Ive already looked on dxdiag, nothing wrong that i can see there. im running most up to date graphics, sound and chipset drivers.

I installed all my games straight to my F drive (2nd hard drive)

Ive only installed cod2 once on this windows install.
