Windows XP Issue - Please help

Hello,
I have a fujitsu seimens laptop (1.6ghz) running windows XP. It used to run fine, but now for some reason it takes almost half an hour to boot from being powered off, and once in windows every pogram that i run takes ages to load (word can be up to 2 mins etc), during this time nothing else runs, and the computer grinds to a halt. This only happens the first time i run the program.

Its driving me mad, as i really dont want to reinstall windows.

I have defraged it, cleaned the registry, its not throttling, and during these slow downs the cpu runs at less than 20%?!?

Any ideas?

if its only happennning the first time the programme loads

it could be a hard drive issue

as once the programme has been loaded first time, it will be loaded into memory.

You've already defragged the drive, so i think it may be re-install or new hard drive time.
