A mate of mine stuffed up his registry so he restored windows from a previous image with True Image but, now it wont aquire or change the IP address to that of his router using either the LAN or wifi. It will connect to the router but, reports limited or no connectivity.

Is the only solution a fresh install of XP ?

Have a look in services.msc to see what the dhcp client service is doing. Try doing an ipconfig /renew at a command prompt. Reinstall the LAN drivers :)

I've tried all the suggestions so far, still no luck. If i do ipconfig/renew it says there is media missing or something like that.

I know its not a hardware fault as it connects fine using a Linux live cd.

Tried that too, as well as a host of other things. Finally admitted defeat and decided a fresh install was the best thing to do, due to the state of the OS.
The rescue partition on the hard drive was missing although apparently it was there when they gave me the computer, it must have magically deleted itself somehow. Then after I formatted the drive and Installed a fresh OS they tell me that they don't know what their passwords and user names are because they never wrote them down or saved them on a pen drive.

Does anyone think it doesn't pay to try and help others when it comes to computers with owners that don't have a clue what they are doing? I take my hat off to you guys that do this for a living!

i do it for a living :/

I should have said a winsock reset as well, that messed up my bro's computer the other week

I only fix computers outside of work for beer now
