Windows XP ntldr error missing

Has anyone had this issue before? Friend from work had asked me to take a look at his laptop.

I have read up it's a boot error so I've checked it's booting from the HDD.

Tried a windows recovery but get prompted with a password screen and can't seem to work it out, the user account didn't have a password, any ideas?

I am going to format the drive once I get into windows, but he had loads of photos he wants before I wipe it clean.

have you tried doing a repair using the XP CD?

boot off a hirens USB/DVD and use ntldr fix it also has XP password resets.
