OK, I'm running XP SP2 on the rig in my sig with an Antec 550W PSU and Windows is booting from a SATA drive but now and then, when it gets to the Windows screen with the black background it will permanently freeze, requiring a manual reboot, any idea what this could be? I try and maintain my rig well with all the latest mobo/graphics drivers etc, oh and the motherboard is an ASUS P5N32-E SLI and other than that it seems very stable.

Check for virus have a look in startup via msconfig see whats loading on startup looks like something is hanging there barring that i would say check the hdd health or it could simply be that the xp install has become corrupted in general i format about every 2 months anyway always a good idea to format when you have issues if that doesnt solve it you its a hardware issue normally

Well I haven't seen anything that looks suspect in the startup and I'll do a virus scan (though I am very careful to avoid installing anything like that) How do I do a HDD health check? (do you mean Scandisk?) Also a format/reinstall would take about 5 hours with the amount of games and whatnot I've got on here, so I would rather avoid that if poss.
