hello,

i am going to build another PC for myself in a few weeks and would like to know if it is ok to use the same CD that i used on my first PC with the original key.

would i be able to use it or do i have to buy anther key or CD ?

You can always phone MS and tell them that you've upgraded your system. They might be generous and give you a new license.

My PC complained I had a conterfiet copy when I stuck XP on my second machine. Wasn't happy but I went to a local shop and bought XP Home. :(

Legally you can't have it on both computers. If you want to switch the O/S over from computer you'll need to call them.

If it's an OEM license, it's non transferable. If its retail, you have no problem. Your most likely going to need to buy a new license, be it retail or OEM.

I was always curious about this as I know Microsoft have the Windows Validation Tool that you get in your auto updates and wasn't sure is Microsoft looked at your pc, found that you were using a non genuine version OR that version was also registered on another machine could they download in there updates some software that would stop your pc working ?

ONLY reason I ask is that I have a copy of XP Pro, that I had on one PC. Then I built a new pc (In Sig) and sole of the components from the 1st pc so that one no longer excists.

So I belive I am not breaking any law in what I have done, only transferred my OS and License from one machine to another, just curious as under my "updates" I have Validation Tool to download and have not done so yet.

Some knowledge about this would be usefull

If you have changed the motherboard, or if the COA is not attached to the case you have a new machine. Most OEM licenses from MS are Non-transferable, which means they can't be moved from one machine to another, even if you uninstalled or deleted it on the previous machine.

Therefore, it is likely that you have broken the terms of the EULA and are not licensed. This is pretty cut and dry, however, whether the XP validation tool picks up on this is another story, as is activation. You may be able to validate and activate, but this does not mean you are legal.
