I picked up an old P4 machine for my dad so he can play some of the old games he loved but trying to install Windows XP when it boots into the setup the resolution goes out of bounds at 720x400 at 70hz.

I tried googling but there aren't many results that are relevant. There is no way of changing the resolution or booting into safe mode.

Is there any way I can force a higher resolution in the setup?

Did you install the video drivers? Which machine did you buy? We'd probably need to know about the specs if installing the video drivers doesn't help.

You'll need to add a 'AutoUnattend.xml' to the install media that sets the resolution at the required stage.

You could probably find one that's suitable on the internet if you searched but you'd probably be better off using 'Windows System Image Manager' from the Windows ADK (web installer, unselect all the other stuff so you only install SIM).
