hello folks

i am building a new pc from scratch and i am going to have vista 64 bit on 1 hard drive - and xp 64 bit on another

i want vista for directx 10 games only
and i want xp64 for all my old games eg- half life, 2 doom3, far cry, C&C3, world in conflict, fear, oblivion, battlefield 2
i will use xp64 for surfing the web and daily use
i will just boot vista for directx 10 games

the thing is ppl on the forum say xp64 is rubbish, but i would like it because it supports more ram in games than ordinary xp 32

my new processor will be Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor 64bit - Retail £234.99

can some of you tech savvy ppl give me some advice - thx

AFAIK Vista 64 is better than XP 64. If you want somewhere to run your old DirectX 9 games, then has to be XP 32 (x86). But I'd give Vista a go since working with fairly new components.

I would say just stick to XP32. I have one PC with XP64 and one with XP32; I've had quite a few problems with games not working properly with XP64 (one of which was a MS game  ) and even some slightly older hardware that wouldn't work because the manufacturer flat-out won't release drivers fr XP64 (a not-so-old HP printer, to mention just one...). Also, no games really need more than 2GB RAM anyway.

XP64 isn't terrible by any means, but not worth the hit-and-miss support, in my opinion.

XP64 is the second best windows out there (behind vista 64 *hugs pc*) just so long as your not using 5 year old hardware it'll be fine.

On another note you'd be foolish to dual boot between xp64 and vista64 for your given reasons! Vista 64 can run everything xp64 can run (dx9 and 10 games run fine on it!) and it looks a lot better (theres something creepy about the default blue of xp after 7 years of it...)

Anyway its a bit of a wate of cash getting vista 64 and xp64, get with the times and roll with vista!

My brother plays most of those games you listed for XP 64 on Vista (albeit 32 bit) with a DX10 card just fine... am I missing something here? Is there a performance hit? If so does it really make a difference with today's graphics cards? Excuse my ignorance I'm not a gamer.

I'd save yourself some effort and go solely with Vista 64. Vista's bad gaming reputation came mostly from early driver issues which have been worked out now. Now you'd struggle to tell the difference between gaming on Vista and XP. And Vista is much nicer for day-to-day use, particularly if you have lots of RAM.

i find XP64 plays Company of Heroes at a higher fps than Vista64

xp64 is not 'rubbish' :)

i reckon test them both out and see what's best for you, all those games will work fine in Vista64

also, i'd save yourself a bit of cash, and either get a q6600 or a £150 dual core

I have been running XP64 since its release, and I only had a few hiccups during the first few days in all honesty, and once a few months later when I bought a new Printer that didnt work.

As far as I am concerned, HP7909 and Curio simply dont have a clue, and if Curio really does have that much issues, then clearly he or she simply does not have a good enough PC!

I am a heavy gamer, I am lucky enough to afford to have any game that I want, and I have a ridiculously massive collection of games and there is NOTHING that does not work straight off the bat in XP64 and in the very very few cases that do have issues, I think you will find that Vista64 will have the same issues.

To say that XP64 has any kind of issue, is simply utter bllusiht. Im sorry, but anyone who says that there are issues, simply dont have alcue about computers and are really not worth listening to.

Also XP64 is slightly faster than any other O/S bar perhaps Server 2003 64Bit ( Although I have not yet had the chance to compare ), but yes, these days there is very little true difference between any version of Windows and another.

I think the real choice of Vista vs XP is simply down to personal taste.
I myself have tried Vista64 on my main PC and it just will not go reliably at all, while I have Premium in both 64 and 32Bit flavours on a couple of PCs on the LAN and they run sweet as a nut, but this one here seems to hate me??? ( always has, even when it was a completely different setup to what it is now? )

I reiterate, AFAIK Vista x64 is better than XP x64 because it gets better support from manufacturers. FatRakoon can you guarantee the OP XP x64 will work fine with whatever components & peripherals he chooses to go with? The issues are their & have affected other people. To say we are speaking BS is a-bit misleading.

But if OP has a copy of both already, he can give them a go.

I haven't found one piece of hardware that will not run under XP64. Every piece of software that I have tried has also been fine. Some older games can be a problem to install if they will not accept a 64bit OS but that will apply to Vista64 as much as XP64.

Every game that I have tried as always run faster under XP64 than Vista, sometimes the margins are very small and at other times they can be quite significant. XP has been more responsive for me in every day use, apart from the search feature of Vista which is really fast.

If I wanted the fastest OS as a gaming platform I would have said XP but now I find that XP64 is every bit as fast. They are both faster than Vista, for me.

However for some people it is not all about speed and responsiveness of the OS. Eyecandy, features and other aspects of Vista can be attractive for some people to run it.

To the OP - Yes I too have read of people claiming that XP64 is not that good, sometimes without ever trying it. For me that has not been the case and I'm often amazed at how much Vista is endorsed as being just as fast as XP. Maybe it is for some people.

A bit sad really and a poor reflection of MS, imo, when we have to have these debates of a much older OS being potentially 'better' than the latest and best that MS can offer.

Some while ago, I built a powerful system for someone with a Dell 30" screen. He wanted to use a PCI TV card with it (Compro VideoMate DVB-T200). I originally built it with Vista64. When I came to configure the TV card, I discovered that there were no Vista-64 drivers for it (I believe that there are now). Because the system had 8Gb RAM, I ended up installing XP-64.

It works fine. I suspect that most companies developing for the retail market believe that the majority of users will have machines with less than 3.2Gb RAM and therefore with 32-bit Vista.

If I were you and had the option, I would go for XP-64 :)

I have only started using it for the past 5 days.
So far so good except the memory hanging problem.

Well the features are about the same except they are updated.
I recommend it :)
