Windows XP PRO License questions

Hi guys

Right my buddy had me over to take a look at his PC.

Basically he's getting the popups to say Windows is not Genuine and he cannot do Windows updates etc.

He does not have a sticker on the side of his PC so I assume he used any old dodgy key he found on the net, now 6 months down the line it's causing problems after intially working..

I have tried a couple of PRO OEM Keys from some HP Machines I had but they did not work. I assume this is because this is a RET version and not an OEM Version of Windows? Not clear on the differences here ><

Anyway so I ran Winver and checked the EULA which stated at the bottom it was EULAID : WX.4_PRO_RTL_EN. It also said Windows XP Professional SP2 Version 2002 in the properties of My Computer.

He wants to buy a Genuine License now from OCUK specifically ; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=OS-002-MS

But I want to be sure this will work considering the "RTL" i was concerned might mean retail and that's an OEM License so therefore might cause issues when trying to change the key itself???

I'm confused and would REALLY appreciate help here.

Many Thanks. :o

OEM licences are not supposed to be used to legalise non genuine licences.

You need to acquire a 'getgenuine' pack from a reseller :)

Have a look at this: PDF

Hi Burnsy,

Thanks for your swift reply.

I am checking out the Get Genuine Kits but they all say OEM Get Genuine Kit ; with focus on OEM? I am confused so will this work with the PC in question as it said WX.4_PRO_RTL_EN in the EULA.

Also would the XP PRO I linked in the original post actually work fine with a simple product key change button or do I need to go this route; I ask this because it's actually more expensive.

Many Thanks !

I think the easiest way to make sure you dont run into any problems is going to be to backup all the stuff he wants to keep then wipe and do a clean install

It should work, but one key difference between this and OEM is you have direct support from MS with this kit.

Microsoft are quite clear on this topic, OEM software is not to be used to legalise a non-genuine system. The whole point of this is to get legal right?

Hi guys

Blitz : I really do not want the hassle of doing a fresh install because it will be me doing it. This is a guy who'd want everything exactly the same and I do not enjoy backing up all his files etc.

Burnsy: Thanks ; I'll look into it . I think there's actually a button that pops up to say Get Genuine I'll click it directly from his PC so it should link us to the correct one. It's his cash not mine but it is an extra 30 pounds for the Get Genuine Key rather than the normal Key which seems a bit off...

Many Thanks.
