Hi Folks

A few weeks ago I built a new system and done a clean install of XP Pro SP2 x86 and upgraded to SP3, and just recently I've started having a strange problem where Windows suddenly stopped me from being a ble to access the internet.

I'd been using the internet without a hitch for a couple of weeks when two days ago after starting up the system a message balloon popped up in the system tray warning that my network connection had little or no connectivity. I opened up the connection setings and clicked the repair button but it told me it was unable to update the IP address.

I checked all the settings, both software and hardware, uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the onboard LAN to no affect. I then installed a USB wireless network dongle but got the same results, no connectivity, no IP address. This led me to believe that it is a windows problem and not a hardware/driver problem.

I didn't know what to do, so I of desperation I did a System Restore to a few days previously, which cured the problem.

Then today I was using the internet successfully, put the sytem in stadby and later woke the system back up and was met with the warning balloon in the system tray again warning that I again had little or no connectivity. Again I did a sytem restore and the connection is working again but I have no idea what the cause is and how to fix it.

My internet connection is an ADSL wireless router plugged into my onboard LAN, the router is working fine.

Here is a screenshot:

My system:

Xeon 3110 Wolfdale 3Ghz
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R with Realtek RTL8168/8111 onboard LAN
2Gb OCZ DDR800 RAM
Samsung 500GB SATA HDD

Windows XP Pro SP3 x86

odd one as its a fresh install, even so Id do the usaul adware spyware and virus scans.

Could try to see if there are any new drivers for your board and network adapter or firmware for your router.

Bit of a long shot but you could try the network cable.

IP set to get address automatically? if so it's highly likely it's a router issue.

It's set to assign IP address automatically, I've had the router for nearly 2 years and it's been no trouble at all, another PC on my network accesses it wirelessly without any trouble.

I'e got the latest drivers and reinstalled them a few times before I did a sytem restore. It's strange that it started happening again today and I had to do a restore again. I've swapped the network cable but I don't think it's a hardware problem because when I installed the wireless USB dongle it also had wouldn't connect.

I'm using Avast 4.8 virus scanner and Spybot S&D

Thanks for the suggestions guys

Things break.

Check what IP address it is geting assigned, if it is an IP starting with 169 then windows would appear to be working correctly further pointing to the router/cable.

I also had a router a few weeks back that refused to assign IP's to wired connections but would allow wireless just fine, it had worked perfectly for a day or two before it exhibited.

Hi Dano

Windows shows the IP address as 192.168.1.2:

I also had the same problem with a wireless USB dongle plugged into the computer, but it worked fine when plugged into another PC.

Do you think that maybe some of the windows system files that deal with networking may have become corrupted?

Well that's been correctly assigned an IP address from that image, might want to click details and check that it's been correctly given DNS servers too.

Have you tried booting into safe mode with networking to see what happens?

EDIT: Also, make sure no other clients on the network have been manually assigned the same address.

DNS server is 192.168.1.1

The connection is working fine at the moment, after I did a system restore. I gues it's just a matter of time before it plays up again, then I will try going into safe mode.

There are only two PCs on the network, mine connected by cable to the router, and the other pc which is connected by wireless. They're both set to automatically assign IP addresses.
