Guys,

I am looking to buy XP Pro, and have been offered an OEM version. It has previously been used. The chap selling it states that it is not linked to a PC like normal OEM's are.

Can someone clarify what the position is with the OEM copies? Is it tied to the original motherboard it was installed on, or can I buy and use it even though it has previously been installed on another system?

I don't want to go and buy and OEM version only to find that I can't legally use it.

Thanks a lot.

Legally I don't think you can use it as this will be against EULA, however it should work without any problems but you might get some problems when activating online, small lie on the phone to microsoft telephone support and activation sorted.

OEM is tied to the motherboard it was first installed on and can not be transfered to a new system legally.

Retail can be transfered to a different system belongs it is unistalled from the old system.

The guy is talking out of his arse :)
Maybe you should refrase that...

It is me that is selling it.
I have had it installed on my shuttle system, Then i had it on my laptop now im using Vista and had no problems activating it.
So that reply is uncalled for

That is a lie
I got a copy when i bought a shuttle system and it is not linked at all with the motherboard

what the hell are you on about? it's tied to the first machine you installed and activated it on. that's it. game over.

but then you installed it on a laptop and are now trying to sell it? that's 3 activations on 1 oem copy? you might physically get away with doing it but it's not legit and you are indeed talking out of your arse if you try and say otherwise.

THIS
So what is this linked to??
As far as i knew you could use it on one machine at a time which is what i have done its never on more than machine.
Some of you guys need to learn how to talk to people

that's already been answered a few times already in this thread.

you're treating it as a retail copy - which that isn't. this is why retail copies cost more.

edit: just realised that's bad wording in my post above. it's actually tied to the motherboard - not the machine. you can upgrade any components you like but you can't use it with another motherboard. where you bought it from or what with is irrelevant.

One install only, then the copy is tied to that motherboard and cannot be transfered, you may get away with it in reality but you are breaking the EULA my friend, thus the copy is not legit and you are talking out of your arse.

The first part of that is good and i understand now. Did'nt realise it was like that.
But i think when a load of idiots say your talking out of your arse is out of order why dont some of you explain it nicely then all is good instead of making people feel small.
Not everyone knows everything..
