Can anyone please help with the following issue:

On switch-on, following the XP logo my pc flashes the good old blue screen of death then power cycles itself. On restart it gets to the point where you can select last known good config, safe mode etc, but it doesn't matter which option is selected the result is another power cycle.

I'm sure it's not a hardware issue (unless it's hard drive related) as it will boot ok to my second drive. I've tried, from the second drive, manually replacing the 5 files (default, sam, software, system & security) in C:/Windows/System32/Config with ones from the various restore points from the System Volume Information folder, but the result is still the same.

Normally I would just think oh rats to it and re-install windows, but I need to get to a couple of emails from MS Outlook. Here lies the problem, my log-in to this drive was password protected and for this reason (I think) I am unable to access them from the second drive. I have tried changing the properties of the relevant folders to allow sharing, but with no success.

Any help appreciated,

Not sure about the blue screen, but you should be able to change the permissions on the folders where your outlook files are.

I have been able to change the permissions for my user profile within the 'Documents and Settings' folder, but am unable to change permissions on the subsequent sub-folders which is very frustrating as I am sure the information I want to get at is still there, I just can't access it!

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Gazza.

Try booting from your XP disc, pressing "R" at the first screen to enter the recovery console and when at the command prompt type "chkdsk /r" (without the quotes.) Worked for me acouple of times on clients PC's
