Ok here's the situation.

Bought myself a dell system (P4 2.66, 256 mem, 40gb) second hand. What are the limitations to upgrading / replacing components on the dell before the xp becomes invalid...if u know what i mean.

Also I dont think the pc is coming with the original cd, which is probably a recovery disc anyway. Will it be legal to load xp using the xp disc from my main pc using the licence key on the side of the dell and just installing drivers for mobo, etc from the internet or will I have to get a recovery disc replacement from dell.

Lastly am i correct in saying that the licence is only valid for the dell and if i decide to build up a new system, that i wont be able scrap the components in the dell and rebuild the system with new parts.

Any help appreciated guys.

Look at the sticky. Its generally thought to be the Motherboard or case.

Legally you are fine, however, you may have a problem with your OEM CD. Dell have their own product key pools and therefore your key may not be vallid with a different disc. Try it, if not get a replacement from Dell.

The OEM licence is non-transferable and therefore you are not licenced for a new rig.

Thanks Burnsey. Read through the stickey. Makes more sense now. Out of interest how legal is BartPE ?

Perfecty legal, there is nothing in the licence to forbid it. MS even have their own version called WinPE.
