I have built a computer from old bits for my partner's daughter and want to buy her XP PRO - Upgrade (~Acedemic version) which I can pick up for around £62.

My question is can I install it as a clean install on a clean hard drive? I have the original Win 98se disc as the qualifying product for the upgrade but don't want to install Win98 first if I can help it.

I read on these forums that you can put the win 98 disc in during the installation as proof eligability but on the website selling the XP pro acedemic upgrade it says win 98 has to be pre-installed. I emailed a Microsoft re-seller and they claim it has to be pre-installed as well

Please could someone with experience of this confirm which is correct?

Thankyou for taking the time to reply

I've not tried it with Windows98, but I've got the Academic upgrade edition of XP and you just boot from the XP CD and put in the (in my case) 2000 CD when prompted.

I can't see why it would be any different with 98...

Thanks Mr.Clarke. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Can't believe an Authorised re-seller wouldn't know this and say that the qualifying operation had to be pre-installed.

Again many thanks

It's different with Vista, MS requires you to install a previous version and activate it (although there is a work around), so that why they probably said it although Vista was the first to have this policy.
