Windows xp problem

I'm getting the message "we apologise but windows has failed to load properly" then a choice of start normally or go to safe mode etc. If i select any option the windows loading screen usually comes up then there is a flash of blue screen with writing that can't be read in the short time it appears, then it returns to the mobo screen. Hardware or software problem? And what can i do about it? I was using windows media player when it initially crashed and since then i have had this problem. Any help much appreciated.

have you tried pressing the pause button to get a better look at the blue screen?

Boot into safe mode (F8 shortly after you machine POSTS). Once booted right click my computer and select properties, click the advanced tab, under startup and recovery select 'settings'
uncheck 'automatically restart'

reboot and see what the blue screen says.
